Next November 24 and 25, 2006, the VI HOSPITEN International Monographic Course on Digestive Diseases will take place, organized by Dr Onofre Alacon, Head of Digestive Services. The subject chosen for this year is Celiac Disease, a syndrome characterized by damage to the small intestine caused by an allergy to a vegetable protein ? gliadin. The disease may produce a great variety of symptoms and is believed to affect one in every 150-200 people in our country ? both children and adults.
This edition will involve pediatricians, primary care doctors, gastroenterologists and members of associations of celiac patients, who will take a close look into the disease.
Among other prestigious professionals, those who have confirmed their attendance are Professors Paul Ciclitria, Professor of Gastroenterology at St Thomas? Hospital in London and Carlo Catasi from the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland and the Pediatrics Department at the Universitá Politecnica Della Marche en Ancona, Italy.
